Under the supervision of teacher Dan Gafney, the 12- and 13-year-olds are arranging and composing selections with loops while recording original material, making backing tracks, scoring films and conducting digital storytelling.
“The students love the process,” Gafney said. “Our young people first select a style of music from a song kit before choosing two or more instruments they desire to use. I tell them to ‘be creative’ by choosing an instrument with a melody.”
Members of the class then create a song using Mixcraft that has a minimum of five tracts and 32 measures.
Gafney reminds the students to “adjust your volumes, use your mixer and set automatic tempo to balance the music.”
Students are also reminded that each track must contain instruments associated with its title. “A drum should not be in a guitar rack,” said Gafney, who told his class, “When your song is complete, name it with the genre and your name.”
